Meet Your ADA Advisors: Guiding You Through the Practice Transitions Process

After submitting your ADA Practice Transitions profile, you are assigned to an ADA Advisor who guides you through the transition process. The Advisor takes time to understand your goals and preferences, then matches you with dentists or practices that fit your criteria. Your Advisor also provides a stream of resources at every stage of the process.

Today, we’re introducing you to Dr. Suzanne Ebert and Betsy Krekling, our ADA Advisors.


Dr. Suzanne Ebert, VP, Dental Practice & Relationships

Dr. Ebert heads up the Advisory team of ADA Practice Transitions and oversees every transition.

What is your dental experience?

I graduated from the University Of Louisville College Of Dentistry. Following a 1-year GPR, I entered private practice as an associate in St. Augustine, FL. I then started my solo private practice in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, which I built for 11 years. After selling that practice, I cared for indigent populations as the Dental Director at a local Federally Qualified Health Center. While there, I expanded the clinics and ensured they ran efficiently and profitably while addressing real needs in the community including eldercare, special needs care, and ER diversion. 

Meanwhile, I became heavily involved in Florida Dental Association leadership, rising through the chairs of my local component and ultimately into the position of Trustee for the Florida Dental Association. 

I also served as Adjunct Faculty for the University of Florida, where I worked directly with senior dental students as they rotated through my clinics. 

How does your experience inform your work as an ADA Advisor?

Each transition is unique, and I have been through a bunch of “odd” transitions myself, building a practice from scratch, then selling it to become the Director at a FQHC. In the process, I learned how to be flexible and keep an open mind about all my options. I bring that experience to every conversation I have with ADAPT participants.

I still consider myself a clinical dentist first, and I am unwavering in my desire to protect private practice dentistry. 

What is your goal when working with ADAPT participants?

Making dentists happy and successful! I consider myself a champion of private practice dentistry and value this profession. My goal is to keep the private practice model alive. I also want to ensure that practices do not close and create access-to-care problems for the public.

In your view, how is ADAPT changing practice transitions?

ADAPT is focusing on what really matters!

I have talked to so many dentists whose previous practice transitions were simply all about the transaction. For example, I hear all the time about buyers who did not even meet the staff until it came time to sign the paperwork – and we all know how important the staff is to the ultimate long-term success of the transition. Sellers feel like they really don’t have any say in WHO buys the practice; it is all about getting the contracts signed. Buyers feel like they are at the mercy of the broker and receive little support or guidance throughout the process – unless it benefits the seller. 

I ensure the transition is a success, which is much more than the transaction that occurs when the contracts are signed. (My colleague Bill Robinson goes into more depth about what that means.)

Betsy Krekling, ADA Advisor

What is your dental experience?

I bring 15+ years of experience in the dental industry to the table. It all began when I landed my first job out of college developing dental networks in rural populations.

Seven years later, I volunteered at a Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation Mission of Mercy event and felt compelled to get more involved in organized dentistry. Less than two years later I accepted a position at the WDA and found myself planning CE events, managing a highly successful mentor program, and serving as the staff liaison for the WDA Practice Transitions Committee.

I also spent time working with a Wisconsin-based practice management firm as a Mergers and Acquisitions Advisor where I was responsible for managing the life cycle of the practice transition process, acquiring potential buyers, and establishing a presence in new markets.

How does your experience inform your work as an ADA Advisor?

Being involved with organized dentistry, paired with the work I’ve done in M&A, provides me with a healthy perspective when it comes to what dentists need as they approach a career transition.

I’ve learned that no two practice transitions are the same, and many dentists lack the resources they need to transition into or out of a practice. I’ve also learned that successful transitions all include time to carefully consider key legal provisions, conduct due diligence, and get an accurate valuation analysis – while the less successful transitions often skip these steps.

That’s where I come in! I help ADAPT members understand all these important steps and processes and make sure they have the resources they need to make the right decisions for their own best interests.  I understand the complexities, so I’m confident that I can help members buy, sell, join, or expand their dental practice.

What is your goal when working with ADAPT participants?

Perhaps it’s my history with organized dentistry, but at the end of the day, people need to go to the dentist. My goal is to successfully and sustainably transition practices in a timely manner to preserve access to care for the public. I shudder to think of anyone closing their doors on my watch.

In your view, how is ADAPT changing practice transitions?

Putting Philosophy of Care on the forefront of match-making is what sets us apart from the rest – because of our model, we can guarantee long-term, successful transitions. Preserving private practice dentistry is what ADAPT stands for, which is far different from competitors that claim to do the same. Buyer (and seller!) beware: many brokers claim to want to preserve private practice one day, but the next day they fish out all available practices and recruits to DSOs.

ADAPT helps members who want to pass on their legacy to the next generation of dental professionals – that’s our commitment. 

What should someone know about the ADAPT process?

I think it’s important to understand the lifecycle of a dental practice transition and the time it may take to identify a suitable match. The good news is, we are welcoming candidates to our platform on a daily basis. Therefore our pool continues to grow, which means it’s only a matter of time until the perfect match is identified. In the meantime, I give members helpful resources and checklists to get ready for the next step.
